Dr. George Edwards, Jr. of Raleigh Hand Center returned from a medical trip to Nicaragua on 1/27/2014. Dr. Edwards volunteered his time and service last week, performing several surgeries for patients with hand and upper extremity conditions and teaching resident physicians in Nicaragua.
Several surgeons at the Raleigh Hand Center have had the opportunity to travel to developing countries on medical mission trips and have seen hundreds of patients in foreign countries with various hand and upper extremity problems. Presented with a variety of congenital anomalies, tumors, traumatic and degenerative conditions, the surgeons have been able to treat complex problems that would normally go untreated. Equally important, the surgeons emphasize the lasting gift of teaching residents and faculty how to manage the problems on their own. Raleigh Hand Center participates primarily in COAN (Cooperación Ortopédica Americano Nicaragüense), a Raleigh-based charitable group dedicated to improving and sustaining orthopaedic care in Nicaragua.
