Dr. George Edwards, III

Dr. George Edwards, III is a native of Raleigh and completed medical school and orthopedic surgery residency at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill. He completed a hand and upper extremity fellowship at the University of Southern California (USC) Medical Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Edwards is board certified in both orthopedic surgery and hand surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons.

He has extensive training in shoulder surgery including primary and reverse shoulder replacement, rotator cuff repairs, and shoulder injuries related to sports. He received the subspecialty certificate in hand surgery and is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. He is married and has two children. Outside of work, Dr. Edwards enjoys exploring the great outdoors with his children. He also competes in triathlons and enjoys playing the guitar and mandolin.

Things I like to do outside of work:

  • Medical mission work both locally and internationally; on the board of Alliance Medical Ministries, a local free health clinic; on the board of COAN, an international medical mission group partnering with a hospital in Nicaragua.
  • Spending time with my family including my wife and two boys, riding bikes, and taking hikes in the mountains.
  • Playing the guitar and mandolin.

Patient conditions which interest me the most:

  • Shoulder conditions such as rotator cuff pathology, shoulder instability, and arthritis
  • Trauma such as wrist fractures
  • Dupuytren’s contracture
  • Nerve compressions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome

My favorite sports teams:

  • UNC Tarheels
  • Carolina Hurricanes
  • Davidson College Wildcats
