History of Raleigh Hand to Shoulder Center
Caring For Patients in Raleigh Since 1991
The Raleigh Hand Center was co-founded in 1991 by orthopedic surgeons Dr. George Edwards, Jr. and Dr. Jon Kolkin. Over the years the practice has grown to become one of the largest medical practices dedicated to hand and upper extremity care in the area. Additional hand-fellowship trained orthopedic surgeons have joined the practice including Dr. James Post, Dr. Paul Schricker, Dr. Terry Messer, Dr. John Erickson, Dr. George Edwards III, and Dr. Timothy Luchetti. The practice has been physician-owned and independent since its founding.
In 2019 the practice officially changed its name to the Raleigh Hand to Shoulder Center. This new name better reflects the practice of treating the entire upper extremity, including the elbow and shoulder.
Hand therapy has been integral to the practice from the beginning. By organizing the therapy department within the clinic, patients, doctors, and therapists can communicate more easily. Therapy treatment plans can be coordinated effectively in our practice. Our hand-to-shoulder therapy practice now includes occupational therapy, physical therapy, and certified hand therapists.
The Raleigh Hand to Shoulder Center plays an active teaching role in the community. The doctors organize a weekly hand conference for UNC orthopedic residents at WakeMed hospital. Additionally, several doctors have volunteered and traveled to developing countries to teach in the classroom, clinic, and operating room.
Our patient-centered mission is to improve the lives of our patients with compassionate, trusted, and cost-effective care. We look forward to taking care of patients in North Carolina for years to come!
